Since 1983, AMARC has helped fortify community broadcasting. Its Women's Network, International Solidarity Network, and conferences have provided forums, strengthened community radio, and ensured that the allocation of frequencies and resources places a high priority on the needs of civil society. With thirty-six subscriber stations in fourteen states, the AIROS network is a national distribution system for Native American programming, including the live call-in program Native America Calling. An estimated 150,000 people hear this show each week. AIROS is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Each morning at seven, this 500-watt station broadcasts Nepali folk music, mixed with development messages, to the Kathmandu Valley. One of their first initiatives, Sara Radio--the "Clean Air Campaign"--regularly monitors and reports on air quality. They plan to promote local radio to the 90 percent of Nepal's 22 million people who live in rural areas or small communities. 70 percent do not read.
