U.K. Science and Innovation Minister Lord Sainsbury on Friday announced funding for 18 projects and studies to explore opportunities in the satellite communications and navigation industry.

The proposals have been chosen from bidders in the third round of the BNSC National Telecommunications S@TCOM Program, initiated in February 2000 with an overall budget of 9 million pounds sterling ($14 million).

The projects cover satellite navigation, mobile communication and spectrum analysis. Studies cover payload issues associated with broadband systems (including V band, minisatellites, and aeronautical services), MPEG 4 broadcasting services, Internet-on-train systems, a range of GALILEO and satellite navigation applications and radio spectrum work.
